Various Types Of Malay Antique Embroidery

Pictures below are some interesting Malay embroidery purchased from an antique dealer.

Objects decorated with these embroidery traditionally were held in high esteem and often had ceremonial usage (adat istiadat). Such items were used particularly for weddings, and too the form of betel nut containers (tepak sirih), bedspreads, cushion covers and fans. Other items were used in relation to ceremonies that marked the completion of learning the Koran (berkhatam Quran) and circumcisions (bersunat).

Malay embroidery work usually incorporates motifs based on plants, flowers or geometric designs. Plant motifs commonly encountered include leaves or shoots such as ferns (daun or pucuk paku), leaves of the water hyacinth (daun keladi) and bamboo shoots (pucuk rebung). Floral motifs include cloves (bunga cengkih), mace flowers (bunga lawang), frangipanni (bunga cempaka) and flowers or the fruit of the pomegranate (buah delima).
