A walking stick or cane is a device used by many people to facilitate walking, for fashion, or for defensive reasons.

Walking sticks come in many shapes and sizes, and can be sought by collectors. Some kinds of walking stick may be used by people with disabilities as a crutch. The walking stick has also historically been known to be used as a defensive or offensive weapon, and may conceal a knife or sword as in a sword-stick.

Blue And White Chinese / Peranakan Large Wash Bowl

This antique Chinese / Peranakan wash bowl is a fine example of a utilitarian object made into a work of art. The piece is glazed white, though the white has a faint blue tone, and then decorated inside with an elaborate scroll of vines and flowers. The exterior is left almost undecorated except for four abstract vegetal shapes, possibly intended to represent pea shoots. This external restraint serves to balance the exuberant loops of the interior design.

The sweet pea flower and vine scroll decoration done in deep blue underglaze marks this as a piece made for export to the Peranakan population for everyday use. The Peranakans are a group of people of Chinese descent who formed expatriate communities in Malaysia. This type of pottery is often referred to as Nyonya ware or Shanghai ware.

The piece is unmarked, which is typical for this type of ware.

Rust spots are maybe one of the most important age signs you can find in porcelain. It is very difficult to artificially make, and even though its possible, someone who have seen a real rust spot on antique Chinese porcelain will know the difference. Thus, the forgers have not quite figured this one yet.
